Official event websiteAbout this event
The orchestra plays a crowd-pleasing program of classical favourites and popular pieces as the sun sets behind the harbour and the Parliament Buildings light up. The evening builds to a rousing finale — Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture, complete with cannon-style booms — synced to a fireworks display over the water that reflects off the harbour. Because it is free and family-friendly, people arrive early to picnic, listen and soak up the atmosphere, and the whole downtown waterfront turns festive for the day. If you are visiting, it is an unbeatable, no-cost highlight: come mid-afternoon to claim a patch of lawn, bring a blanket, snacks and a warm layer for after dark, and settle in. Victoria's restaurants, harbour and attractions are all right there for before or after. Exact timing shifts slightly each year, so check with the Victoria Symphony for this year's date and start time — but it is reliably a highlight of the Island's August.
